James L. Brooks followed up his beloved Terms of Endearment with this classic romantic comedy, featuring a high-strung news producer finds herself in a love triangle between a talented but self-doubting reporter and a charming new anchor, who embodies the growing trivialization of news that she is determined to fight against. The trio of stars, Holly Hunter, William Hurt, and Albert Brooks (no relation), were all nominated for acting awards at the 1988 Academy Awards, along with the film for Best Picture, and James L. Brooks for Screenplay.
“But more than a snapshot of a specific time and profession, ‘Broadcast News’ is Brooks’s keenest study to date of human relations, and his most fully realized film. Hunter, Albert Brooks, and William Hurt are individually and collectively superb, caroming off one other as newshounds who venture outside their comfort zones.” ~ Carrie Rickey, Criterion
