Following writing work on Robert Townsend’s Hollywood Shuffle and Eddie Murphy: Raw, Keenen Ivory Wayans mades his directorial debut with this parody of blaxploitation films of the 70’s. Years before creating In Living Color, Wayans and company picked up the parody film mantle from Jim Abrahams and the Zucker Brothers, leaning back on a long history of making fun of this style of films with friends. With an incredible cast featuring actual blaxploitation stars like Isaac Hayes and Bernie Casey, and the screen introduction of a young comic by the name of Chris Rock, I’m Gonna Git You Sucka remains one of the greatest parody films of all time, loving and biting in equal measure.
Jack Spade returns from the army in his old ghetto neighborhood when his brother, June Bug, dies. Jack declares war on Mr. Big, powerful local crimelord. His army is led by John Slade, his childhood idol who used to fight bad guys in the 70s.
“Wayans hard-hitting parody…doesn’t let up. He excoriates the hypocritical ex-radicals, still drawing a cheque from the Man, some of the more suspect manifestations of modern street culture, and even those old, bold superheroes themselves. And that is exactly why ‘Sucka’ is so memorable. One doubts whether this relentless satire could have held together without those actors who perpetrated the superhero myths helping to unfrock those myths in the way they do.” ~ Leslie Goff, Empire
