The title, a reference to Preston Sturges’ classic Sullivan’s Travels, hints at the tone for this screwball comedy, while the source text, Homer’s ‘Odyssey‘ adds elements of Greek Tragedy to produce the one-of-a-kind tonal balance only the Coen Brothers can deliver. The brothers team up for the first time with stars George Clooney and Tim Blake Nelson, and reunite with frequent collaborators, the John’s Turturro and Goodman to tell the story of three escaped convicts in the deep south of the 1930’s, searching for hidden treasure while a relentless lawman pursues them.
“When Everett and co’s band, called The Soggy Bottom Boys, go to the radio shack or take to the stage to sing songs like ‘Man of Constant Sorrow’ the film becomes, oh my lord, how to describe it? Eardrum candy? Yah, that’ll do: eardrum candy. The O Brother soundtrack awoke many of us to a musical heritage we never even knew we liked.” ~ Luke Buckmaster, The Guardian
