Ingmar Bergman’s revered psychological drama takes on a crisis of identity and the power of art in a world filled with real-life horrors. Bergman’s usual troupe of actors are on top form here, with Bibi Andersson (The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, Scenes from a Marriage) as a nurse tasked with caring for an actress who has mysteriously stopped speaking, played by Liv Ullmann (Autumn Sonata, Cries and Whispers, Shame).
With a supporting performance from Gunnar Björnstrand (Winter Light, Fanny & Alexander, Through a Glass Darkly), and unbelievable black and white cinematography from Sven Nykvist, responsible for crafting some of the most haunting images in all of film, layering the lead’s faces against one another as personal boundaries are blurred into a dreamlike crisis of identity.
“Though most people will have their favourite Bergman, this one must surely be considered his crowing achievement. It’s a film which earns its status as an enigma by creating a compelling shell around the mad, hidden core. Surreal experimentation which suppresses easy answers is rarely this entertaining, and the language of cinema has seldom been used in such outlandish manner before or since.” ~ David Jenkins, Little White Lies
