Director: John Coney Run Time: 82 min. Release Year: 1974

Starring: Christopher Brooks, June Tyson, Marshall Allen, Raymond Johnson, Sun Ra

Presented as part of ‘Afrofuturism: From Sun Ra to Wakanda’ in collaboration with Wake the Arts.

Sun Ra and his Solar Myth Arkestra return to Earth after several years in space. Ra proclaims himself “the alter-destiny”, meets with inner-city youths and battles with the devil himself to save the black race.

“Jim Newman didn’t set out to make the most radical Afro-Futurist blaxploitation film of the 1970s. But then, everything about ‘Space Is the Place’, which started as a documentary project focusing on Sun Ra and His Intergalactic Solar Arkestra, was unlikely and paradoxical.” ~ Andrew Gilbert, Classical Voice
