Videodrome is perhaps David Cronenberg’s masterpiece, the ideal marriage between his signature body horror and existential concerns regarding our evolving relationship to technology. James Woods stars as Max Renn, the programmer at a Toronto TV station in pursuit of an underground program known as Videodrome, a broadcast that blurs the line between television and true horror. His fascination is shared by radio host Nicki Brand, played by Debbie Harry, otherwise best known as the one and only Blondie. Their mutual obsession drives them deep into a web of conspiracy and paranoia in one of the most prescient films of all time.
“Videodrome, prophetically for 1983 (and looking increasingly less like fiction), shows us a world of technological hyper development in which people merge with their electronic media. Like an autoimmune catastrophe, the boundary between our bodies and what’s outside them becomes indistinguishable.” ~ Gary Indiana, Criterion
