Kino im Nord Karolina Film Festival
Winston-Salem owes its very existence to the pioneering German Moravians who settled this region in the 1700s. In 1753, these intrepid settlers embarked on an arduous journey along the Great Wagon Road, blazing new trails to establish Bethabara – the first Moravian settlement in what is now Winston-Salem.
This was just the beginning of a profound German influence that shaped the cultural fabric of the Piedmont. By 1766, the town of Salem had been founded, becoming the thriving center of Moravian life and industry. Though the German language faded over time, the indelible mark of German pioneers remains deeply woven into our community’s heritage.
Today, countless locals proudly trace their ancestry back to those original German settlers. What better way to honor that legacy than by hosting Kino im Nord Karolina – a vibrant celebration of German-language cinema from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland?
Join us as we celebrate Winston-Salem’s deep connection to German and Bavarian history, as well as some of the best films German cinema has to offer! From exciting new festival titles, to celebrating master German filmmaker Angela Schanelec with a double feature of her most recent films and a special repertory title, we are excited to start the Oktoberfest celebrations early this September.
We extend an invitation to join us at other events including:
