An introduction to the art of cinema for Middle Schoolers!
Rising Grades 6-9
August 4-8
9 a.m.-4 p.m.
Over five days, campers will take an in-depth look at each aspect of the filmmaking process through film screenings and discussions. We’ll start the day viewing a contemporary release, followed by an older film to show how these techniques have developed over time. With a curriculum designed by a/perture’s curator and programming director, Jake Laystrom, each film will be preceded by an introduction and followed by a group discussion, specifically highlighting each day’s focus. Build a solid foundation in film education for your budding cinephiles!
Day 1: Screenwriting
Day 2: Cinematography
Day 3: Directing
Day 4: Editing
Day 5: Performance
By exploring film history and film theory through individual disciplines in the filmmaking process, campers will gain a better understanding of the images they consume, and why certain choices were made to bring these stories to life. With a strong foundation here, campers will have a head start in their future careers as filmmakers, critics, programmers, and most importantly, movie lovers.
Sample films that may be viewed include (final schedule is TBD):
  • Raiders of the Lost Ark
  • Double Indemnity
  • Sullivan’s Travels
