A deep dive into the art of cinema for High Schoolers!
Rising Grades 10-12
Over five days, campers will take a look at the most important cinema movement in American history, the New Hollywood of the 1970’s. Responding to a depleting audience, less and less interested with the huge musical flops studios had been putting out, a few successes that introduced violence, sex, and adult themes back into mass entertainment gave directors star power for the first time in film history. Influenced by serials they watched growing up, or the blooming French New Wave movement of the 50’s and 60’s, directors had as close to free reign as they’d ever get to make films that mattered to them, and connected to audiences. As it goes, the films got bigger, budgets more expensive, and the audiences more receptive to familiarity, chasing the escape of the newly introduced summer blockbuster instead of epic, personal tales. With a curriculum designed by a/perture curator and programming director, Jake Laystrom, campers will gain an invaluable understanding and appreciation for the films and filmmakers of the era, one that introduced us to legends like Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway, and Francis Ford Coppola (to name a few).
