Thelma & Louise rocked my world when I saw it shortly after its release in 1991. That first matinee screening, I hated the ending. It all seemed so hopeless. A couple of days later I saw it again. How could the film end any other way as long as patriarchal structures dominated the world experienced by the eponymous characters? The ending was perfect. After watching it many times over thirty-five years, teaching it as a class and workshop text, and writing about the film and the screenplay, Thelma & Louise remains a cultural icon and still captivates and motivates me. Our discussion focus will be Callie Khouri’s screenplay — her first! — which won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay in 1992, but I expect the conversation will be free-ranging because there is so much to say about this movie.
