Lucrecia Martel directed several acclaimed short films and documentaries prior to making her feature debut with this film. It was shot entirely in her hometown of Salta, and serves as the opening to an unofficial trilogy of films set there including ‘The Holy Girl’ and ‘The Headless Woman’ which both competed for the Palme d’Or at Cannes. Martel remains a singular filmmaker, who’s inventive and encompassing use of sound rivals her visual compositions to create strikingly real and shocking works of art.
The life of two women and their families in a small provincial town of Salta, Argentina.
“Every frame is dense with life, with children and animals running in and out, yet it’s not messy. Instead it’s highly focused–and something of a small masterpiece.” ~ Meredith Brody, Chicago Reader
