Director: Ross McElwee Run Time: 158 min. Release Year: 1986

Starring: Charleen Swansea, Dede McElwee, Patricia Rendleman, Ross McElwee, Ross McElwee Jr.

Wake Forest University Documentary Film Program Professor and Filmmaker Cara Pilson will introduce the film

Documentarian Ross McElwee originally set out to make a travelogue of sorts tracing General William T. Sherman’s infamous scorched-earth march through the Confederacy in the latter stages of the Civil War. Instead, haunted by a recent breakup with a girlfriend, McElwee ends up documenting his progress — or lack thereof — in starting a new relationship. His journey then becomes one of self-reflection and self-discovery rather than a historical/sociological exploration.

Cara Pilson is a Teaching Professor and former Program Director of the Documentary Film Program at Wake Forest University. She has served as associate director and chief researcher on award-winning documentaries broadcast nationally and screened internationally. Her credits include Negroes with Guns: Rob Williams and Black Power and Freedom Never Dies: The Legacy of Harry T. Moore—both films aired on PBS and received the Erik Barnouw Award for Outstanding Historical Documentary. She also served as Associate Director and Director of Research on The Last Flight of Petr Ginz, distributed by First Run Features and Forward Entertainment.
