John Sayles remains perhaps the most underrated voice in American independent cinema, not recognized nearly as much as some of his contemporaries, such as the other John’s Cassavetes or Waters. From his debut on, his independent productions have allowed for muscular and idiosyncratic films that define American life, perhaps no more so than his masterpiece, 1996’s Lone Star.

By blending personal histories with the larger tapestry of American turmoil, all set in a Texas border town, Sayles excavates the personal relationships of the townspeople, fully intertwined whether they like it or not. Featuring a heartbreaking lead performance from Chris Cooper as the town’s sheriff, investigating the potential crimes of his father, played in flashbacks by Matthew McConaughey while clashing with a never-better Kris Kristofferson, Lone Star deserves recognition as one of the greatest American films of all time.

When the skeleton of his murdered predecessor is found, Sheriff Sam Deeds unearths many other long-buried secrets in his Texas border town.
