Inspired by the ‘video nasty’ list created in the UK in the early 80’s, identifying films that found critiscm from religious organizations, press, and cultural commentators for graphic violence, nudity, or other obscene creations in the art of film. With the full, uncut version of Ken Russel’s seminal The Devils releasing in November, we are celebrating formerly banned films that push the boundaries of horror cinema. Whether they were ahead of their time, or genuinely groundbreaking in their accomplishments, these are films that demand to be seen in the theater with an audience.
